Arcane Publishing had a stall at the Bridport Bookfest in West Bay on Saturday. Unfortunately, whilst West Bay is always packed on a sunny summer day, the weather had decided to turn once again and the very wet harbour was mostly deserted!
Nevermind... at least we authors and publishers were all inside, dry and cosy.
We had decided to try out a more elaborate display than usual for our books, and had gathered a variety of items that would reflect the contents of the novels.
For I Am a Muse, a contemporary tale of lost love and artistic inspiration mostly set in Cornwall, we used stones and shells found on various beaches, a guide book of Cornwall and a vintage vinyl record with a sleeve showing a surfer in action to evoke the surfer's life of the group of friends featured in the book; as a tribute to the characters of Alda and Alastair, both painters, we brought with us the original painting purchased at Alexandra Palace's Antiques and Collectors Fair a few years ago (it lives in Miss Gish's office at home!), an easel and a real vintage painter's palette with brushes and old paint tubes. We even found a paint-stained sheet which added "authenticity" to the whole thing! Unfortunately, we had forgotten to bring our lovely vintage mannequin head... Next time!
For The Book of Thoth, a Gothic novel mostly set in 1925 and full of ghosts, alchemists, Ancient Egyptian gods, time-travellers and other strange and marvellous things, we gathered quite a few items bought at antiques and collectors fairs, including two issues of The Play magazine which features towards the end of the book, and lovely postcards of the actress Pauline Chase to illustrate Lady Sophia Chronos's pre-WW1 stage career. Of course, Thoth and Princess Amunet were not forgotten - we do have in our possession a framed (fake) Ancient Egyptian papyrus showing the passage between Life and Death, perfect to express various themes in the book. And of course, Lord Vangelis Chronos's alchemical experiments were alluded to thanks to an assortment of old brass objects of dubious provenance purchased at the Giant Shepton Mallet flea! (Witchy candle and dusty chandelier, author's own).
I do hope I will have the opportunity to put this display together again at another event...
There will be some announcements soon about the next events the ArtPix / Arcane Publishing team will attend, and we also have a few very cool music-related events planned for the autumn...
Oil 54 and Arcane Publishing have also started working on the next LONDON: Winter Tales event (#3). We have sent a few emails and if everything goes to plan, you will be in for a real treat early next year! Read about forthcoming events as well as about our previous Winter Tales events, go HERE.
On Saturday 11th August, I will have a stall at the Bridport Bookfest which will take place at the Salt House and Fishermen's Green in West Bay, Bridport, Dorset.
For this event, I am going to have fun and experiment with my display. I will put together a stand which reflects the narrative and setting of each book. I have found quite a lot of fab items and will just make it up as I go along.
Obviously, I will post pictures once the event is over! Below are some pictures of a few items I will bring along, there will be many more!
People will then be able to go and have a look at the Matt ArtPix/Arcane Publishing unit round the corner at The Customs House!
Yes, it is true!
Oil54 and Arcane Publishing have just started planning for our third London: Winter Tales event, which will take place in London in early 2019.
Once again, expect a mixture of spoken words, literature and music! We already have some great names on our list, so fingers crossed it all come together!
We are also thinking about expanding the event in both scope and capacity...
We hope to be able to announce the details on 24th November in London at another special event - WATCH THIS SPACE!
Here is a video which gives a hint about the theme of our next event - and no, it is NOT pornography.
It was a quieter than usual day at the Giant Shepton Flea last Sunday - blame it on the heat, the tennis and the football World Cup! Still, Matt ArtPix and Arcane Publishing had a great day!
It was also the first time my 1968 fashion portfolio was shown at a fair. Quite a bit of interest but no sale (I am selling the whole thing as one item, and you'd need to have deep pockets for this one!). I am considering my options to sell it online.
I am also thinking about starting a "proper" online bookshop (I would prefer a brick-and-mortar one, but it's not going to happen any time soon!).
Here are a few pictures of our stall - quite a few items have now gone, but if you see anything you'd love to own, do contact us...
Our next event is the Bridport Vintage Market on Sunday 29th July. See our EVENTS PAGE for more details...
Arcane Publishing and Matt ArtPix will be back to the Giant Shepton Flea tomorrow at The Royal Bath & West Showground in Somerset!
We will have some very special items, and here is some of the stock Arcane Publishing will be bringing:
Several years ago, I invested in this fantastic and completely unique fashion portfolio. I have decided that the Giant Shepton Flea is a prestigious enough event to show this one-off item!
It contains a large size scrapbook made of pages of authentic 1960s & 1970s fashion magazines. Colourful extracts below (click on the gallery pictures to view them):
The main section of the portfolio is an astonishing fashion project from a fashion student studying at the West Sussex College of Art in 1968 (and of course, I have a letter with all these crucial details!). I have researched the student and couldn't find anything about her... Hopefully she has made it in her dream job!
The portfolio is genuinely jaw-dropping; here is an authentic 1968 catwalk collection with all the required details. Someone could actually recreate the whole collection just using these patterns! Look at the style of the drawings, 100% 1960s!
I have over 120 original drawings, most with design notes and some with fabric swatches still attached!
All sold in a brand new black art portfolio.
Of course, Arcane Publishing is also a seller of second-hand books, and this time, I will concentrate my stock on glamour:
Here's a rare book on the iconic French starlet Brigitte Bardot:
I will have a varied stock of fashion-themed books, including quite a few rare items!
I have two books about the infamous bohemian Paris of the 1920s and 1930s, including one with photographs and text by renowned photographer, writer, artist and filmmaker Brassai.
I will also bring a little bit of my stock of ephemera and vinyls, including this stash of eleven The Shadows French "45 tours" from the 1960s!
We had a fantastic time at local festival Alice's Wicked Tea Party on the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset! Our stall looked great and we sold quite a few items!
Go to Miss Gish's BLOG to read the report and see all the photos of the bands!
Below are pictures of our stand in one of the barns on the Saturday!
So here we are, June 2018 this weekend, and it can only mean one thing for us Dorset-dwelling music fans: Alice's Wicked Tea Party!
This is the grassroots festival's fourth edition and the second for us. Read Miss Gish's little report on last year's festival HERE.
Once again this year, there are quite a few bands we want to see, especially the excellent the Membranes. But what this festival allows you to do is discover and listen to new bands outside of the genres you naturally go for and have a great time watching and listening to live music surrounded by the amazing countryside. Hopefully someone's warned the horses in the nearby field that the mad and noisy humans are coming back again!
This edition of the festival promises to be bigger and better, and likewise, I do hope I will take pictures of a better quality...
On Friday we will be enjoying the music as punters; on the Saturday, Arcane Publishing and Matt ArtPix will be setting up stall in one of the barns and display our wares to the audience: band t-shirts, original art, new and second-hand fiction and non-fiction, music and art magazines, and a box of discounted books at 50p each!
Below, find a selection (there will be many more!) of items Arcane Publishing will be taking to the festival.
See you on Friday in the audience and at the stall on Saturday!
When we left the Arcane/ArtPix towers early on Saturday morning, the sky was dark and the clouds low.
On the way, the rain started falling and got worse as we approached Bridport. We arrived at the St Michael's estate under a sustained rain and thought we would never be able to set up our stall.
Miraculously, within 10mn, the rain had stopped and we managed to sort out our stall - thanks to a bit of plastic kindly provided by our neighbouring stallholders!
We had glorious weather the rest of the day and we had a fab time. We had tried to give our stall a 60s flavour to follow the day's theme!
We were visited by loads of pooches, big and small - they always provide great entertainment! A special mention to the laid-back Ted at Old Albion, such a cool dude!
Our next event is the fab music festival Alice's Wicked Tea Party on Friday and Saturday (we'll have a stall on the Saturday only).
We will be back at the Bridport Vintage Market in July (we're skipping one as it's a World Cup match day for England in the middle of the afternoon!)
More events have been added to our EVENTS PAGE!
