So this Saturday 4th October, it's The Southend Book and Arts Fair at The Forum, the new state-of-the-art library in Southend. Arcane Publishing will be there with designer and artist (also Arcane's very own designer and typesetter!) Matt ArtPix who will also have a table to show off his colourful designs! The fair is part of The Forum's 1st anniversary celebrations, so we hope that a lot of people will attend. Of course, we will be adapting our stock for the day for the event, and here's a sneak preview of what we will have on our stall for you: We will have copies of Carya Gish's first novel, I Am a Muse. Please go to the PRESS PAGE to read reviews and see if you're tempted! We will sell the books at our special event price of £6 (instead of £7.99). We will be promoting our next book, out very soon, The Book of Thoth. We will have a few print outs with an extract and a few of the prelims: cast of characters, map of the estate, etc. to show what the content of the book will look like. We are very proud of Matt ArtPix's design and typesetting work for the book! We will also have 15 of the 21-volume series "The Enchanted World", published in 1985 by Time-Life. These are absolutely gorgeous books which I would keep if I had room for them! We will sell them at a discounted price at the fair! Below is the 1985 advert for the books with the one and only Vincent Price! Also, we will bring a nice little selection of books for children and young people which we will be selling at very reasonable prices! We strongly believe that children should be encouraged to read - and fall in love with reading! - as early as possible, and our stock is very varied and attractive! And of course, a selection of our fabulous fashion, cinema and entertainment stock! We have some more events coming up!
1st November: Old Spitalfields Market, London 8th November: Gravesent, Kent 7th December: Alexandra Palace, London Please check our EVENTS PAGE for more details.

9/26/2014 New poster!Coming to a stall near you! Check out the events we will be appearing at HERE.
Thank you Matt ArtPix for the design! 9/23/2014 Reading this Thursday!Thursday 25th September, Miss Gish will be giving a short reading of her forthcoming second novel, The Book of Thoth, at Chalkwell Hall, HQ of Metal Southend, as part of the first Southend Writers and Artist Network (SWAN) evening.
9/22/2014 New September stock! So the team is back from beautiful Dorset and we have soooo much to do! Of course, making sure that The Book of Thoth is published on time for our November fairs - fingers crossed - is our number 1 priority, but we are also preparing the exciting new stock we got on our holiday! Here's a sample of the volumes you will find on our stall this autumn... We have definitively concentrated on Fashion and Glamour. We also got some rather fab classic cinema items which we will post here at a later date! (a gentle reminder: we do not sell books online, only on our stall!) I am thrilled to have found this book. It is in perfect condition, and inside is a riot of fashion and art. This is the book published on the occasion of the exhibition "The Warhol Look: Glamour, Style, Fashion" that toured New York (Nov 1997-Jan 1998), Toronto (Feb-May 1998), London (May-Aug 1998), Marseilles (Sept-Nov 1998), Sydney (Dec 1998-March 1999) and ended at the Andy Warhol museum in Pittsburgh in Spring 1999. It is a very special book and is as new! We will post more stock news on here soon!
9/1/2014 New stock! 60s comicsI got my hands on 10 great comics from the True Life Library (from 1962 to 1965). They are quite interesting as they are full of the contradictions of the era. The heroines are "gutsy" young women ready for an adventure. BUT they ALL end like this (without exception): So for example, Merion The Mod is a member of that dangerous teenage gang, the mods. A journalist tries to befriend the group to understand what exactly is a teenager and make a headline-grabbing TV documentary about that mysterious beast, the teenager... Merion is the hard-as-nails, dancing, drinking, motorcycle-riding (well, riding pillion at least) female mod... But she weakens on the way... And the moralistic ending finally comes! The wild teenage girl agrees to be tamed! Eeek! Of course, any adventurous girl out there knows that some essentials for a great adventures are: Some weird ads are scattered around the place at odd places within the narrative: And of course, some awesome pictures of the boybands of the time! My favourites are The Undertakers! Don't they look HOT? These comics will be for sale on our stall at our autumn events!
8/23/2014 Next event! Southend Book and Arts fairHere's the official poster for the next event Arcane Publishing will be attending: The Southend Book and Arts fair at the wonderful Forum, which is Southend award-winning shiny new library and art gallery.
Arcane Publishing will have a stall next to our designer Matt ArtPix, and we will be concentrating on entertainment, young readers, fantasy and sci-fi (more details about our stock will be revealed before the event!) We will be selling copies of Carya Gish's first novel I Am a Muse at the special event price of £6 (instead of RRP of £7.99) and we will be promoting her next novel, The Book of Thoth, to be published later this autumn (unfortunately, it will be not printed on time for the fair!). The Arcane Publishing team is looking forward to it! 8/22/2014 Terror and WonderThe British Library has an exhibition about Gothic Literature on from 6th October to 20th January 2015, Terror and Wonder: The Gothic Imagination.
Our second novel, The Book of Thoth, is a Gothic Novel, and will be published this autumn... Perfect timing, we say! And of course, we will go... Miss Gish is now starting work on Book 3, The Right Place, set in Dorset. Read her blog about it HERE!
We have a draft publishing schedule for the book, but lack of funds might mean that this will have to be amended. As it stands, we are aiming for a pub date of November 2017 (!). This is the optimistic schedule, by the way. Lack of funds might force us to change this on the way. On our short break over the weekend, we found the perfect display background for the promotion of The Book of Thoth. Apparently, it does genuinely come from Egypt (i.e probably a tourist market around sharm el-sheikh)! But we were on the lookout for something that would spice up our stall when we get the printed copies back from the printers, and this looked like the ticket. So it's coming to a stall near you this autumn! 8/7/2014 The Book of Thoth - slight delayA few posts back, we optimistically stated that The Book of Thoth was on track... Well, it's not anymore... Life's got in the way as it usually does.
Miss Gish is still doing some corrections and slight amendments to the first typeset proofs, and everything will have to be checked before it goes back to Matt ArtPix for the second round of proofs. Everyone at Arcane Towers deserves a break, and that's just what we are going to do soon... We were planning on getting everything ready to go to the printers before our fortnight in Dorset, and we can see now that this is not going to happen... We do not want to rush things, because we want to put out the best book we can with our limited means. We hope that we will have the hard copies of the book with us by early November, hopefully on time for the So Vintage London market at Old Spitalfields in November and the Alexandra Palace Antiques and collectors fair in December. We are also thinking about increasing our presence at Old Spitalfields, perhaps with a monthly double stall at So Vintage London from next year and then from this autumn (on time to catch the Xmas shopping crowd!) maybe a weekly single stall on Wednesdays. We might as well develop our online bookshop from early next year - We will keep you posted... 8/3/2014 Old SpitalfieldsArcane Publishing and Matt ArtPix had a great day at So Vintage London at Old Spitalfields market yesterday. The truth is that this is probably our favourite market!
The logistics are incredibly easy (get into car/A13/arrive), you get a buzz the whole day because you are in the middle of that fabulous city that is London. Our pitch was fantastic, with a lot of space to get creative with our tables and create a colourful and attractive stall. We had changed the layout of the stalls and we had tweaked our stock - and we had a lot of interest, people really looked and browsed and even asked us when we'd be back, which is fantastic. Unfortunately, we cannot post any pictures of the day as WE HAD FORGOTTEN OUR CAMERA! But trust us, the stalls looked fab. I now need to stock up on more books about vintage fashion and classic icons - my "Marilyn Monroe in fashion" book lasted less than an hour on the stall! We hope to be back at Old Spitalfields market on November 1st (we booked some holidays and a local event ages ago for September and October!). But Matt ArtPix and Arcane Publishing have been discussing the possibility of getting a monthly slot at Old Spitalfields in order to build up an audience/custom from 2015. Watch this space! |
