8/3/2014 Old SpitalfieldsArcane Publishing and Matt ArtPix had a great day at So Vintage London at Old Spitalfields market yesterday. The truth is that this is probably our favourite market!
The logistics are incredibly easy (get into car/A13/arrive), you get a buzz the whole day because you are in the middle of that fabulous city that is London. Our pitch was fantastic, with a lot of space to get creative with our tables and create a colourful and attractive stall. We had changed the layout of the stalls and we had tweaked our stock - and we had a lot of interest, people really looked and browsed and even asked us when we'd be back, which is fantastic. Unfortunately, we cannot post any pictures of the day as WE HAD FORGOTTEN OUR CAMERA! But trust us, the stalls looked fab. I now need to stock up on more books about vintage fashion and classic icons - my "Marilyn Monroe in fashion" book lasted less than an hour on the stall! We hope to be back at Old Spitalfields market on November 1st (we booked some holidays and a local event ages ago for September and October!). But Matt ArtPix and Arcane Publishing have been discussing the possibility of getting a monthly slot at Old Spitalfields in order to build up an audience/custom from 2015. Watch this space! 7/28/2014 Back to Old Spitalfields - more stock! So this Saturday, Arcane Publishing will be back in London at So Vintage London, Old Spitalfields market! Our stock will be a bit different this time: we have a few new things in stock (see our previous blog) and we are presenting a few items from our French language stock! Ennio Morricone original movie scores, French import, 70s A Clockwork Orange, French "Orange mecanique" , 1972 A small selection of French books: Jean Genet's classics "The Balcony" and "Our Lady of the Flowers", a book by French fantasy/sci-fi writer Serge Brussolo and a "celebrity action" novel from the 1990s. Do you like comics? We'll bring a few French vintage ones on Saturday! We have one Asterix from 1980... Some gorgeous Olivier Rameau comics (1984-1985), full of wonderful adventures made of dreams, fantastical characters and poetry. A real treat! Love going to gigs? Then read the hilarious "L'Enfer des Concerts", a comic about gig-going and popular culture in 1999! Tempted? We have more surprises in stock which we will bring with us!
See you at Old Spitalfields market this Saturday 2nd August! 7/23/2014 New stock in!We got some new stock at the weekend, and we will be taking a few items to the So Vintage London market at Old Spitalfields on 2nd August. First up is a fantastic "exterior and interior" book, mixing architecture, interior design and lifestyle: "The House Book" (1978 edition) by the iconic designer and founder of Habitat, Terence Conran. A must for all interior design nuts in love with the 1970s! For lovers of 1960s music, we have a book telling you all about the 100 great albums of the decade... We have at least two of them and they will be on our stall! (we might have a few more, we'll check!). If you like sci-fi novels, we have come across some cool paperbacks!
The Ganymede Takeover by iconic sci-fi writer Philip K.Dick (with Ray Nelson), 1967 edition. Windhaven by Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin (with Lisa Tuttle), 1988, 1st VGSF edition. Star Winds by Barrington J. Bayley (1978, 1st printing) 7/9/2014 New stock: something different...*Please note: the vinyls are not available to buy online. We only sell them at events! A new, very special item has now been added to our stock.
If you have a child in love with wonderful stories, this is one for you! This is the story "L'Oiseau du Nord et l'Oiseau du Sud" / "The Snow Bird and the Sun Bird" narrated by Grace Kelly of Monaco! This is a bilingual vinyl from 1970, recorded by Grace of Monaco, formerly movie star Grace Kelly in two languages, French and English. There is also the illustrated book of the story in both languages; the images are by prolific Belgian artist Nadine Forster (linked article is in French). This comes from Miss Gish's personal collection. As a child, she already dreamt of becoming a writer and adored books and stories, and she has dozens of them, unfortunately mostly in French... This is a genuinely lovely item that will enchant any story-loving child and adult! Find it on our stall at our next market, So Vintage London at Old Spitalfields market on 2nd August! 6/16/2014 New event, new stock! We have just acquired a few items for our stock, just on time for our next events (news just in this morning!): Arcane Publishing and Matt ArtPix will be trading at Old Spitalfields Market as part of So Vintage London on 5th July. We are very pleased to have been selected and we hope that this will become a regular spot for us... Maybe not every months, but several times in the year would be good! We have some more exciting events lined up for you for the rest of the year, but we need to confirm them first before announcing them. Watch this space! Below are a few new acquisitions from this weekend. I would like to concentrate on fashion, music and classic cinema icons and glamour for So Vintage, so I was really thrilled with some great finds! 80s fashion with some great illustrations! The book itself is not vintage, but it features reprints of some of most outrageous pages from Cosmo 1970s and 1980s! Super for fashion students and fashion history nuts! 100% perfect condition! And now for the gents... Really wonderful book, and 100% perfect condition! I have also acquired some cute books! Bod was apparently very well known... This is a first edition, 1966! 4/16/2014 The Arcane Publishing online shop is up!Well... Kind of...
WELCOME TO THE ARCANE PUBLISHING ONLINE SHOP! So today I decided to try and get started on the Arcane Publishing online shop. I have chosen The Big Cartel as it seems to be the easiest to use. I am starting with their free option, so I cannot put in more than five products. At the moment, I am only selling I Am a Muse, but when I feel a bit more comfortable with that online selling thing, I might upgrade and then start selling some of my second-hand and vintage/rare books. Watch this space! It's a bit rough and ready, I admit, and the design is a bit dodgy at the moment, but it seems to be working, and therefore, people can now buy I Am a Muse (it is using a Paypal payment account, and I still need to see how all this works.) I am still quite nervous around technology and selling online is quite a big step for me. Let's see how things go... 2/18/2014 First fair of 2014 in Southend-on-SeaOur first fair of 2014 is a bit less than two weeks away now! It will be the Southend Vintage and Retro Fair organised by Haddon Events, and will be taking place at The Chase Sports and Fitness Centre in Prittlewell Chase.
Matt ArtPix and Arcane Publishing will be sharing a double stall, and we will have a few copies of I Am a Muse for sale at the event. For this fair, we will be concentrating on classic cinema and icons, as well as fashion. For our next event in Bexleyheath in London on March 9th, we will bring some rarer books on a wider range of subjects - but always concentrating mainly on music, entertainment, theatre and cinema. We will post a specific blog about this event next week, but I can already tell you that Arcane Publishing will have its own stall, and therefore will be able to spread out the books a little and be more creative with the display. It will be a trial run for some more Arcane Publishing stalls in the future! Matt ArtPix and Arcane Publishing hope to start trading at Old Spitalfields Market soon - we need to sort out the logistics first! Arcane Publishing's ambition is to launch a small pop-up bookshop one day (probably next year!)... Watch this space! A sneak peek at our stock for next week: 1/7/2014 Online shop ideasSo this year, it's all about publishing our second book and raising awareness of our little imprint.
As we are doing everything ourselves - writing, editing, design, marketing, promo, etc. - everything is going incredibly slowly. The writing gets in the way of the publisher side of things and the publisher side of things gets in the way of the writing, plus the fact that we need to (try to) earn a living to pay the bills... We have been thinking about setting up an online shop, but as we are not techies, computer wizzards or business geniuses, we are extremely worried about starting anything and getting it wrong... So we've started looking around for tips and inspiration. There's an interesting blog HERE about the pros and cons of SHOPIFY and some good hints about what you have to think about when choosing an e-commerce platform. There's a lot of reading and thinking to do, and this is a long-term thing, but it would be great to have an online shop up and running for the publication of our second novel. Watch this space! 7/22/2013 Paper wins and other things...We at Arcane Publishing, have always thought that e-books were an aberration. We do not publish e-books!
For the past ten months or so, Arcane Publishing has been testing the waters as a seller of second-hand books, and we love it so much that we will be expanding that side of the venture in the forthcoming months. Over the summer, we will add a new page to this very website and start listing the wonderful second-hand volumes we have for sale. We are planning on having our own stall at events from 2014, but in the meantime, go to our Events page to see where you will find Arcane Publishing and Matt ArtPix sharing a stall! In more exciting news, we have now sent Carya Gish's biography and author photos - taken by the ever wonderful Matt ArtPix -to Metal Southend; we have been told they will be used for the promotion of the Shorelines literary festival online and in printed literature. We are thrilled to be part of what promises to be a cracking event! More news about it hopefully soon! |
