The first details about the fab literary festival that will take place in Leigh-on-Sea in November have been released! It is organised by arts organisation Metal and curated by artist and author Rachel Lichtenstein. It is "a small, intelligent and thought-provoking festival. It takes place in various outdoor and indoor venues at the heart of the fishing community of Leigh-on-sea on the banks of Thames Estuary, at the point where it officially becomes ‘open sea’. This unique festival aims to provoke discussion, re-awaken senses, excite the adventurous spirit and explore new literature about the sea." Arcane Publishing will be involved in this event but we cannot say anything until everything has been confirmed! In the meantime, we will keep posting updates here, on the Carya Gish website and on Facebook. For more details, go to THE SHORELINES PAGE ON METAL'S WEBSITE. "Highlights in 2013 include: multi-award winning nature writer, Robert MacFarlane (current chair of the Booker Prize) on Britain’s most dangerous path, the Broomway; Mercury Award winning folk singer, Sam Lee bringing his own take on sea shanties; pop historian Travis Elborough (Wish You Were Here) on the British Seaside; Man Booker shortlisted author Deborah Levy with Swimming Home; a mixed-media installation by The SeaWomen of Korea by Greek artist Mikhail Karikis; award winning author and broadcaster Philip Hoare discussing the recently published The Sea Inside (BBC4 Book of the Week); noir crime fiction author Cathi Unsworth reading from her novel Weirdo set in a fictional seaside town, a multi-media film/performance of Swandown with cult writer Iain Sinclair, artist Andrew Kotting & musician Jem Finer; a special performance of Britten’s children’s opera Noye’s Fludde in the 100th anniversary year of his birth; French-Norwegian performance poet Caroline Bergvall (currently exhibited at Tate) with DRIFT her interpretation of Saxon sea poems; an afternoon of readings and talks by contemporary non-fiction writers exploring the unique landscape of the Thames Estuary, including Ken Worpole; Dr Jules Pretty (winner of Angel Prize) and Greek writer Julian Hoffman on the unique landscape of the Hoo Peninsula; The Fishwives Choir; local author Syd Moore (The Drowning Pool) set in the Essex coastline; an alternative audio walk exploring historical tales from the Estuary by US artist and writer Justin Hopper; films; writing workshops for both children and adults and much more." 8/23/2013 New stock in!During our stay in Devon, we have found some great additions to our stock of second-hand books! This is a rather glamorous selection... There are some great novels by well-known writers in the pile, but I have to admit that I have picked them up partly because of the wonderful vintage images on their covers. They will fit very well on our stand at the forthcoming vintage and antiques fairs we will be attending (check out the EVENTS PAGE for dates.) Here's a wonderful find: a special edition of Jerome K. Jerome's Three Men in a Boat; in fact, it is the centenary edition published in 1989 by Alan Sutton Publishing in collaboration with the Bristol publishers of the first ever edition, J.W. Arrowsmith. It features wonderful B&W illustrations and some evocative pictures of the journey as it was at the time the author wrote the book! The "second-hand books for sale" section of this website hasn't been done yet, but we hope to find some time this autumn to list all our stock on here.
7/22/2013 Paper wins and other things...We at Arcane Publishing, have always thought that e-books were an aberration. We do not publish e-books!
For the past ten months or so, Arcane Publishing has been testing the waters as a seller of second-hand books, and we love it so much that we will be expanding that side of the venture in the forthcoming months. Over the summer, we will add a new page to this very website and start listing the wonderful second-hand volumes we have for sale. We are planning on having our own stall at events from 2014, but in the meantime, go to our Events page to see where you will find Arcane Publishing and Matt ArtPix sharing a stall! In more exciting news, we have now sent Carya Gish's biography and author photos - taken by the ever wonderful Matt ArtPix -to Metal Southend; we have been told they will be used for the promotion of the Shorelines literary festival online and in printed literature. We are thrilled to be part of what promises to be a cracking event! More news about it hopefully soon! A French friend has an online bookshop and has kindly accepted to trial I Am a Muse there. Therefore, I am a Muse is available to purchase on Amazon via his shop and on Ebay. Amazon lists the book as being in French language - a bug in the system - but it is in English!
We've had to increase the price as it is sold across the world with free postage - so we had to take postage to the US etc. into account! Also, this bookshop is a proper business and the complex software used to put it all together is quite expensive... We thought it would be good exposure though, and you never know... 6/18/2013 Hedingham event!Arcane Publishing will be sharing a stall with Matt ArtPix at A Vintage Affair, Hedingham castle, this Sunday 23rd June.
We will be using our brand new display easel for the first time! 5/19/2013 Learning about publishingArcane Publishing has just purchased The Insider's Guide to Independent Publishing published by the Independent Publishers's Guild.
Concise and clear, it covers the basic aspects of setting up as a publisher today. We will be using it as a guide and reference from now on... 4/9/2013 I Am a Muse: first review in!The first review of I Am a Muse is in and it is a truly lovely one by someone who knows what he is talking about. Mr. Glyn Pope is himself an author as well as the founder and organiser of the St Clementin Literary Festival in France (a literary festival with a difference as it caters for both French and English literature). Arcane Publishing might visit the next edition of the festival in August 2014! ‘I am a Muse’ by Carya Gish is an intriguing story. Thoughtful and questioning. Certainly not a day to day read for light entertainment. But that comment is not intended as negative criticism. Its audience would enjoy a philosophical and provoking novel, telling the tale of two very different women and how their lives intertwine. 2/27/2013 I Am a Muse delivery date!It looks like I will get the copies of I Am a Muse delivered on Friday 8th March.
We are very excited at Arcane Publishing towers! Now to decide on pricing, publication date, promo, etc. There is a lot to be done! 2/24/2013 I Am a Muse has gone to the printers!Well, this is it...
The content and cover files have just been sent to the printers... Now it's fingers crossed there will be no issues and we'll get a delivery date for the books in the forthcoming days... Now we have business cards to design... We might also produce some bookmarks to go with the book, and we need to work on the promo blurb too! Deep breath... 1/24/2013 I Am a MuseWe are thrilled to announce that I Am a Muse will be typeset by Steve Pottinger at Ignite Books and printed by Bell and Bain Ltd in Glasgow.
The manuscript is being checked a last time this week and will be on its way by the end of the week. |
