We are going to Dorset - where our third book, The Right Place, will be set - to find inspiration... When we come back, it will be only a month until Shorelines: Festival of Literature of The Sea. This autumn/winter, we will also be doing more promotion for the imprint and study our options for development... The first draft of The Book of Thoth is nearing completion, but it is behind schedule again... We are still aiming for an autumn 2014 publishing date though! We had an intense working weekend setting up and trading at the Alexandra Palace Antiques, Collectors, Art Deco and 20th Century fair...
Go to MISS CARYA GISH'S BLOG for more pictures! The first details about the fab literary festival that will take place in Leigh-on-Sea in November have been released! It is organised by arts organisation Metal and curated by artist and author Rachel Lichtenstein. It is "a small, intelligent and thought-provoking festival. It takes place in various outdoor and indoor venues at the heart of the fishing community of Leigh-on-sea on the banks of Thames Estuary, at the point where it officially becomes ‘open sea’. This unique festival aims to provoke discussion, re-awaken senses, excite the adventurous spirit and explore new literature about the sea." Arcane Publishing will be involved in this event but we cannot say anything until everything has been confirmed! In the meantime, we will keep posting updates here, on the Carya Gish website and on Facebook. For more details, go to THE SHORELINES PAGE ON METAL'S WEBSITE. "Highlights in 2013 include: multi-award winning nature writer, Robert MacFarlane (current chair of the Booker Prize) on Britain’s most dangerous path, the Broomway; Mercury Award winning folk singer, Sam Lee bringing his own take on sea shanties; pop historian Travis Elborough (Wish You Were Here) on the British Seaside; Man Booker shortlisted author Deborah Levy with Swimming Home; a mixed-media installation by The SeaWomen of Korea by Greek artist Mikhail Karikis; award winning author and broadcaster Philip Hoare discussing the recently published The Sea Inside (BBC4 Book of the Week); noir crime fiction author Cathi Unsworth reading from her novel Weirdo set in a fictional seaside town, a multi-media film/performance of Swandown with cult writer Iain Sinclair, artist Andrew Kotting & musician Jem Finer; a special performance of Britten’s children’s opera Noye’s Fludde in the 100th anniversary year of his birth; French-Norwegian performance poet Caroline Bergvall (currently exhibited at Tate) with DRIFT her interpretation of Saxon sea poems; an afternoon of readings and talks by contemporary non-fiction writers exploring the unique landscape of the Thames Estuary, including Ken Worpole; Dr Jules Pretty (winner of Angel Prize) and Greek writer Julian Hoffman on the unique landscape of the Hoo Peninsula; The Fishwives Choir; local author Syd Moore (The Drowning Pool) set in the Essex coastline; an alternative audio walk exploring historical tales from the Estuary by US artist and writer Justin Hopper; films; writing workshops for both children and adults and much more." So this weekend is the big Alexandra Palace Antiques, Collectors, Art Deco and 20th Century fair (now with a vintage market as well!). Matt ArtPix and Arcane Publishing will be setting up on Saturday and will make sure our double stall stands out. Fingers crossed we have enough space for the shelves! Here are some of the books we'll be selling: Yves St Laurent by Yves St Laurent This wonderful book was published on the occasion of the exhibition "Yves Saint Laurent: 28 années de création," held 30 May to 26 October 1986, at the Musée des Arts de la Mode in Paris. Illustrated throughout with photographic images of Laurent's clothes, as well as reproductions of his sketches. Preface by Bernard-Henri Levy. Commentaries by Hélène de Turckheim. Mark Booth's 1983 book Camp is a reference in the genre! In the book, camp is defined as "to present oneself as being committed to the marginal with a commitment greater than the marginal merits." A really lovely book for anyone interested in the Camp aesthetics and the history of entertainment. The first paperback edition of Tony Crawley's 1974 book, The Films of Sophia Loren, with hundreds of photos, some rare! This 1976 book features some absolutely gorgeous vintage fashion illustrations! Folies-Bergères souvenir programme (1955) Featuring:Benny Hill, Tommy Cooper, Claudine Céréda, Vicki and Fredi, Barbara Elevera, Jeremy Hawke, Ganjou Brothers and Juanita, Ilona Adams, Marqueez, Johnny Keoni, Morlidor Trio and the Folies-Bergères girls! Black Dance by Edward Thorpe (1989) From Amazon: "This is a study of Black dance from its origins in Africa, in the slave songs and dances of the Caribbean and the American South through the minstrel shows and burlesque theatres of the 1980s and 90s. It includes its development under the impact of jazz and its invasion of Broadway and Hollywood as well as its integration with classical ballet and modern dance." We will also be selling some French import CDs, pop and classical music, 60s and 70s (a few singles and some LPs). And last but not least, we will have some copies of I Am a Muse and will be giving out flyers/bookmarks! 8/31/2013 New events! Advance warning...Matt ArtPix and Arcane Publishing will be back on the road over the next two weeks, with two great events!
First up will be a 1940s family day at the Mill Race Garden Centre in Colchester next Sunday 8th September (weather permitting). Then on September 15th, it will be the big one - we are really excited! Nelson events' Alexandra Palace Antiques Collectors, 20th Century & Art Deco Fair - now with a pop-up Vintage Fair! MORE ABOUT THESE EVENTS ON MISS GISH'S BLOG! 8/16/2013 The London Book Fair and an update...Arcane Publishing will be visiting The London Book Fair next year. We won't have a stall (at £300 per square metre, this is not something we can afford to do! Even the "New Title Showcase" is out of our reach, at £180 a pop...).
We will just go as visitors and will keep our ears and eyes open. We are also thinking about bringing Arcane Publishing to Facebook. Maybe... In other news, draft 1 of The Book of Thoth is coming on nicely, if slowly. Carya Gish hopes to be starting on draft 2 from October onwards. We are preparing our appearance at Shorelines: Literature Festival of the Sea that will take place in November. Arcane Publishing is also developing a few non-fiction ideas at the moment, we'll keep you posted on this... Finally, we have made some decisions about distribution. For the forthcoming year, Arcane Publishing will carry on distributing the books, but when the time comes to publish The Book of Thoth (next autumn), we will probably try and deal with one of the big distributors in order to bring Arcane Publishing's titles to a wider public. Watch this space! Arcane publishing is now off to Devon for a few days... |
